Working together for Newfoundland and Labrador

Our province is home to many groups working hard to advance local governance goals. The SLG Hub is proud to work with the following organizations to foster innovative and collaborative solutions to improve the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Partner Spotlight: The Harris Centre

For over 20 years, the Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development was a trusted, non-partisan organization that not only conducted and facilitated original research on public policy and regional development in Newfoundland and Labrador, but also acted as a central connector between municipalities, community organizations, industry, provincial government, and the university.

The Harris Centre had two primary goals: to assist in the responsible development of the economy and society of Newfoundland and Labrador; and to stimulate informed discussion of important provincial issues.

To save money, Memorial University of Newfoundland decided to shutter the Harris Centre in August 2025. The SLG Hub mourns this loss of expertise, institutional knowledge, and trusted policy and research support. All of us in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador are the poorer for it.

Memorial University Logo

The Hub for the Study of Local Governance in Newfoundland and Labrador (SLG Hub) is based out of Memorial University, which is located on the ancestral homelands of the Beothuk, whose culture has now been erased forever and can never be recovered.

We acknowledge the island of Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) as the unceded, traditional territory of the Beothuk and the Mi'kmaq. We also acknowledge Labrador as the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Innu of Nitassinan, the Inuit of Nunatsiavut, and the Inuit of NunatuKavut.

As First Peoples have done since time immemorial, we strive to be responsible stewards of the land and to respect the cultures, ceremonies, and traditions of all who call it home. As we open our hearts and minds to the past, we commit ourselves to working in a spirit of truth and reconciliation to make a better future for all.

Thank you to First Light for the use of your educational resources.
