The SLG Hub is proud to highlight former member Mim Rahman’s participation in the November photo exhibit for Picture Us: Research at Memorial, a centennial initiative by Memorial University’s Office of the Vice-President (Research). This event showcases the diversity and impact of research at Memorial through curated visual exhibits. The exhibit features research from across the university, including Mim’s graduate thesis on transportation equity and the challenges of the urban–rural divide in the transition to zero-emission vehicles.
Mim Rahman (MA, Political Science)
Beyond Infrastructure: Transportation Equity Across the Urban–Rural Spectrum
In her Masters research, Mim Rahman (SLG Hub researcher, 2023-2025; MA, 2025) explores how transportation electrification policies intersect with questions of equity across geographic contexts. Focusing on British Columbia’s mandatory Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) transition, her work compares Metro Vancouver and the largely rural Kootenay region to reveal persistent urban–rural disparities in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, affordability, and access to information.
Through this lens, Rahman demonstrates that while climate policies are central to achieving environmental sustainability, they must be tailored to local realities to avoid deepening existing inequalities. Her findings highlight the need for targeted, place-based policy approaches that ensure the transition to electric mobility advances both climate goals and transportation equity at the local, national, and global levels.
